Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Sequels Are Tough

How good are this week's major new releases at the box office? "Next week is great!" That's Matt Atchity summing up how movie reviewers are feeling about flicks opening Friday.

"The critics are not that happy about the movies in wide release this week."

Reviews say it's better to be an orphan than a member of Robert De Niro's "The Family". The majoriy of them say that is's just not funny enough. Now there is a small minority of the critics that say this is vintage De Niro and Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones comedy in that they can mix the tough guy aspect as well as laughs."

Director James Wan won over critics with "The Conjuring" and "Insidious" but can't pull it off with "Insidious: Chapter 2".

"Some of the critics that like this say that it's a decent sequel it's got it's own tone and it's own story, the ones that don't like it say that it really isn't all that scary."

The one bright spot in an otherwise dark weekend is "Blue Caprice", the story of the Beltway snipers.

"This is a movie that critics are saying is worth seeing...at Sundance people are talking possible award nominations for some of the cast here. The vast majority of critics think that this is a good movie and worth seeing."

Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
