Makeshift Dunes Save Boardwalk From Fire, Not Flood This Time

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE PARK, N.J. -

Hurricane Sandy proved that sand dunes can save boardwalks from deadly storms. And Thursday we found out dunes can also save boardwalks from fire.

The fire that broke out in Seaside Park rapidly spread north to neighboring Seaside Heights.

Nearly a year ago, that town's iconic boardwalk was destroyed Sandy.

Thursday's fire threatened it once again, and officials used dunes to stop the fire from going any further.

File video shows what the boardwalk looked like the day after Sandy hit. FOX 29's chopper flew over the Funtown Pier. You can see it was in pieces, washing away in the tide.

The community spent all winter rebuilding the boardwalk.

A timelapse video shows the amazing transformation from March 18 to May 21 in just seconds.

Three months later, workers found themselves racing to undo all that work, when the fire hit.

Crews ripped out a 25-foot portion of the boardwalk and filled the void with makeshift sand dunes.

The first time they tried this, the fire jumped the trench. But the second time it worked, and firefighters could hold their position.

The break saved the rest of the boards and businesses.

It will be a few more days until business owners on the boardwalk will be able to get a look at the damage done.

It will be a long road to recovery, but you can be sure they will rebuild, just like they did after the hurricane.
