Fear grips Granite Falls after double homicide; $1K reward offered for Dikken

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. (KMSP) -

Many residents of Granite Falls, Minn., say their lives are full of fear because a local man suspected in a fatal double shooting is still on the loose, but the victims' loved ones are speaking out for justice.

Inside Susie's Hair Company, something is missing for Daniela Jensen.

"We just had a great bond," she said.

For more than three years, Jensen worked side-by-side with one of her best friends, Kara Monson.

"Someone you could have fun with; someone you could cry with," Jensen remembered.

Monson was supposed to be in Jensen's wedding in just two weeks.

"Coming here every day and seeing that chair -- that's the hardest," Jensen said. "We have to be reminded of it, and her clients loved her very much. We can't come close to filling that void."

One Labor Day, Monson was gunned down inside her Granite Falls home. Police say her ex-boyfriend, Andy Dikken, pulled the trigger, and he is also suspected of killing Chris Panitzke -- who Monson had recently started dating.

"This is a man who had a relationship with my family," Eric Monson, Kara's cousin, told FOX 9 News. "Shocking that anyone can commit an act like he committed -- even more when it's someone you know."

Eric Monson said his cousin and Dikken were together for three years, but they broke up in April. Investigators were quick to describe the fatal double shooting as domestic violence related, but the fact that Dikken has been at large for nearly two weeks is drawing out the family's pain.

"We are trying to distance ourselves from that anger," Eric Monson explained. "Our concern is for the safety of others right now, for the safety of this community and each other. I admit, there has been a tinge of fear in myself as well."

Eric Monson told FOX 9 News his family is concerned Dikken may still be in the area and could target them. His truck was found abandoned 5 miles north of Belview, Minn., which is about 25 miles southeast of Granite Falls.

Since then, however, no sightings or clues about his whereabouts have been reported. That's why Monson's family released more photos to FOX 9 in the hopes that anyone who sees him will call police. For anyone who may be helping him, they have a strong message.

"If he is being helped, you are not doing anyone any good," Eric Monson said. "You are hurting an awful lot more people than you are protecting right now."

Until he's caught, Kara Monson's loved ones plan to keep calling for justice in their community and beyond.

"It's terrifying," Jensen said. "We need the closure. We need the justice. Now that we've had to say goodbye to Kara and Chris, he needs to be found. At whatever cost that comes at, he needs to be found."

CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of $1,000 for anyone who provides information that leads to Dikken's arrest. Tips can be provided online at www.crimestoppersmn.org or by calling 1-800-222-8477.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
