Falcons stadium site could be finalized soon

ATLANTA -

The site for the new Atlanta Falcons stadium could be made official soon.

FOX 5's Morse Diggs said that an official statement could be made as soon as Friday regarding a deal to purchase Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

As FOX 5 reported on Wednesday, the city has made a formal offer to buy the church property for more than $14 million.

The church sits on the site preferred by many for the new billion dollar Falcons stadium. Another church that sits on the site, Friendship Baptists Church, has already agreed to terms to sell its property.

The site is the optional choice for many because of its proximity to public transportation.

"I'm happy. I hope that we really do our part and I believe our mayor is exhausting every effort possible," said Atlanta City Councilmember Ivory Young.

The congregation of Mount Vernon Baptist Church must still approve the deal.

Not everyone is sold on the south site. State Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) and community activist Derrick Boazman staged a rally on Thursday against the plan to build the stadium on land currently occupied by Morris Brown College.

The protest took place outside of the Arthur Blank Foundation on Howell Mill Road.
