ALBION, Mich. (WJBK) -

Students at Michigan's Albion College are being told to leave campus by noon today after the private, four-year school and the city of Albion suffered serious storm damage on Wednesday evening.

School officials are concerned about the debris scattered across campus and the lack of power and phone service to the area located 85 miles west of Detroit.

According to a post on the school's website College Interim President Mike Frandsen said, "while power has been partially restored to campus, there is still much damage to assess and clean up. The College is closed and will remain so until Sunday afternoon September 15th, with classes resuming on Monday."

Faculty and staff are being told to stay home unless told otherwise by their supervisor while crews assess the damage. Students who cannot leave campus are being told to go to Seaton Hall.

Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down both on and near the campus. The National Weather Service said an official will visit the area to determine whether a tornado caused the damage around Albion.

Durk Dunham, director of the emergency management division of the Calhoun County Sheriff Department, told the Battle Creek Enquirer that little damage was reported elsewhere in the county. "We think it was straight-line winds but they might have had a tornado," he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
