DOC van transporting inmates crashes near Florence

FLORENCE, Ariz. -

A Department of Corrections van transporting 10 inmates and two officers rolled over near Florence Wednesday afternoon.

About 2:30 p.m., the van was involved in a single-vehicle accident on State Route 79 at milepost 126, south of Florence.

Multiple people were injured in the collision. One inmate was flown to Maricopa Medical Center with injuries to his arm and back. Seven inmates received treatment for minor injuries and abrasions.

A corrections officer sustained minor injuries and the other corrections officer was checked out as a precaution.

DOC spokesman Doug Nick says the inmates are part of the wildland fire crew out of the Florence prison facility. They were returning to the prison from an assignment in Oro Valley.

The first responders to the scene were two DOC nurses who were in the area and provided immediate medical attention.

As to what caused the collision, the driver told DPS he saw a white SUV stopped in the northbound lane of 79 as he approached. He swerved to avoid it, and lost control. DPS is now looking for the driver of that vehicle.

Traffic in the area is slow moving. It will be about 6 p.m. until the roadway is cleared.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
