DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Abraham Pearson was to be arraigned in court Wednesday, but due to extensive power outages around downtown Detroit, his arraignment has been postponed until Thursday.

Meanwhile, his lawyer is laying the groundwork for an insanity defense.

James Howarth has represented Pearson from the beginning on those initial carjacking and armed robbery charges. Pearson was scheduled to be sentenced for those charges on Monday when he authorities say he stabbed a sheriff's deputy and escaped from a holding cell, prompting a near 15-hour manhunt.

However, Howarth thinks there's an explanation behind Pearson's alleged actions.

He says Pearson doesn't even recognize him anymore. "He had a vacant look on his face, and I tried to talk to him to make sure he knew I was there. He could not communicate with me. He had a history of psychiatric problems," Howarth explains.

Pearson is back behind bars now after police found him walking along I-94 and Mt. Elliot late Monday night thanks to a 911tip.

Fox 2's Maurielle Lue obtained the surveillance video of Pearson's last few minutes of freedom.

Pearson approached a man in the parking lot of the Van Dyke Liquor Store on Detroit's east side. The video shows Pearson asking for directions to the west side of the city. Pearson told the man he was 'the one who got away.' The man gives Pearson directions and then they shake hands and Pearson walks away. That man was the one who then called 911 and tipped off police to Pearson's location.
