Flagstaff rockslide crushes man, seriously injures him

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -

While in Flagstaff early Tuesday morning, a 27-year-old Phoenix man was pinned and crushed by a large boulder that came loose and slid down a mountainside.

The victim was on Elden Lookout Road about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when a rockslide occurred. He was attempting to move a boulder that had fallen into the road when another boulder weighing 30 tons came crashing down towards him.

Four of the victim's friends were able to remove him from under the boulder. His legs and pelvic area were crushed and severely injured by the weight of the boulder, described as "Volkswagen-sized."

"I'm not exactly sure how they did it," Summit Fire Department Capt. Brian Parker said. "Just the fact they were able to get it off him was impressive, and it made our job a whole lot easier. Anytime there's any kind of crushing injuries like that where they're trapped, the sooner the better to get them out."

Coconino County sheriff's officials arrived and the victim was prepared for transport. He was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center.

The men were on their way to work on one of the radio towers.

Elden Lookout Road has been closed. Current conditions: www.fs.usda.gov/coconino

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
