MULBERRY (FOX 13) -

If Pastor Terry Jones goes ahead with his planned Koran-burning demonstration to mark September 11th, he'll be doing it without a county permit.

Late Tuesday, Polk County announced that the Board of County Commissioners had denied the request by Jones and Stand Up America Now.  The group had requested a permit to burn 3,000 Korans in Mulberry's Harpe Park to mark the anniversary of the terror attacks.

Jones had originally planned to hold the event on private property, obviating the need for any permits. But heavy rains flooded that land, forcing Jones to find a new location over Labor Day weekend.

The late change did not leave the county enough time to review the application.  In rejecting the request, the Board of County Commissioners cited its policy of needing at least two weeks' notice.

"The short time period that the county had to review the application made it impossible to work through all of the issues, most importantly public safety precautions," said Mianne Nelson, communications director.

The sheriff's office had previously told FOX 13 that Jones and others could be fined or even arrested if the demonstration proceeds without the proper permits.
