Survivor of Ga. 400 crash thankful for Good Samaritans

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

A man who survived a violent wreck on Georgia 400 is thankful for three Good Samaritans who risked their lives to pull him out of a fiery van.

James Carnes said that after his car crashed on Monday morning, he realized he was really in danger. Carnes was paralyzed from the chest down in a diving accident nearly two years ago.

"I know after a couple of minutes, that's when I started to realize that the steam from the front had started to turn to really dark smoke and that's when I realized the van was on fire," Carnes said.

After the car crash in his van, he worried that his fear of being trapped and unable to escape danger would become a frightening reality.

"That's when people started to realize, ‘He's in a chair and that's the reason he hadn't got out of the van yet,' and that's when everybody went into action," Carnes said.

Gary McBryar and a colleague were among those pulling their cars over to pull Carnes out after realizing he was paralyzed and had no escape.

Carnes thinks he wouldn't have survived without those helping hands.

"Goodhearted people like that will stop and help someone," Carnes said. "A lot of people will ride by and don't want to get involved, but good people like that are hard to come by."

Carnes is eager to meet his rescuers to thank them in person.

One woman, 60-year-old Maria Martinez, was killed in the crash.
