Rain displaces residents, floods Ariz. streets

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Heavy rain has flooded local streets across central and northern Arizona, and displaced residents on the Navajo Nation.

Tribal spokesman Erny Zah says flooding forced people in Tonalea, Chinle and Many Farms out of their homes this week. He says more than a dozen homes have been damaged.

A shelter was operating in Chinle with the help of the American Red Cross.

The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood watch for much of Tuesday covering large parts of northern and central Arizona.

Meteorologist Robert Bohlin says gauges in the Yarnell Hill Fire burn area had measured an inch of rain or more, leading to flooding on local streets.

Bohlin says scattered thunderstorms will persist Wednesday. Drier weather is expected Thursday and into the weekend.
