School District Leaders Visit Philly Schools Amid Budget Crisis

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The first day of school has wrapped up in the troubled Philadelphia school district. 190,000 students headed back to class today.

Many students are adjusting to different buildings because the district was forced to close two dozen schools in June. The district's facing a $304,000,000 budget deficit.

Officials say that the district is prepared for the new school year, despite staff and program cuts. The president of the teacher's union visited schools today to see how students and staff, are dealing with the cuts. The Philadelphia Federations of Teachers president, Jerry Jordan, says that despite the deep budget cuts, teachers are stepping up and making sure their students have everything they need.

"The teachers are walking into schools with supplies that they purchased for their children for their class because they care," he said.

Meanwhile, the district's superintendent, Dr. William Hite also visited students for their first day of school. He says negotiations between the district and teachers are going well, but more concessions are needed.

"Many of the professionals already have a high school diploma, already have a degree. These children don't have that yet. The only way that we can provide that to them is to all sacrifice so that they can have what they need," he said.

Parents are encouraged to meet with their children's teachers and school staff to make the most of their school year.

A new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found overwhelming opposition to the way the arrest of Eric Garner was handled while the majority support the broken windows policy, which cracks down on low-level crimes to prevent bigger ones from occurring. Garner's death has brought the policy into the spotlight. The Staten Island man had been selling untaxed cigarettes when he was arrested. A police officer placed him in a chokehold and Garner died.
