Jekyll Island prepares for Shrimp & Grits Festival

Posted: Updated:

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - Amateur cooks and professional chefs will soon be squaring off on the Georgia coast to see who makes the tastiest shrimp and grits.

The 8th annual Shrimp & Grits festival opens Sept. 20 on Jekyll Island. The 3-day, weekend event features cooking contests for its namesake dish plus craft beers and a country music concert.

Beer lovers will be able to sample brews from Southern Eagle Distributing at the air-conditioned Morgan Center.

And Southern Living magazine is sponsoring a concert on the Jekyll Island wharf featuring dinner and an intimate performance by country singer Rob Crosby.

More than 100 arts and crafts tents are planned for the 2013 festival, with more live music from regional acts on an outdoor stage.

A dance party for kids and tweens looks like a rave or perhaps a wild night at the club. But actually, many of the people at this party probably just learned how to tie their shoes. Twin brothers Tyler and Tristin recently had a FUZIPOP party in Manhattan to celebrate their 10th birthday. Never heard of a FUZIPOP party?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the federal prosecutor investigating political payback allegations involving the Republican's administration are both set to speak at a prisoner re-entry conference on Thursday.
Former NBA player Jayson Williams says trying to re-enter society after serving time for shooting a limousine driver was more difficult than being in prison.
