St. Marys tourist train plans to open in October

Posted: Updated:

ST. MARYS, Ga. (AP) - A tourist train running on the tracks of the old St. Marys Railroad is scheduled to fire up its locomotive and start bringing passengers aboard next month.

The Brunswick News reports owners of the St. Marys Express plan excursions on the first two Saturdays in October. With open-air passenger cars and a caboose pulled by a 1952 locomotive, the train will take passengers on hour and 15 minute trips through woodlands and marsh in Georgia's coastal southeast corner.

The October trips will incorporate a seasonal theme with actors from the St. Marys Little Theatre playing roles at a zombie crossing, a pumpkin patch and a hobo camp.

St. Marys Mayor Bill Deloughy says he hopes the train rides will boost tourism in the area.
