Family of deceased Dr. Fata patient still charged to obtain medical records

Jeff Berz's father was treated for leukemia by Dr. Fata, the doctor now accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients to gain millions of dollars from Medicare.

Berz's family wants answers.

"Did my father need chemotherapy? Did it help him or hurt him?" Berz tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

He is in the process of getting his father's medical records, but it's going to cost him.

Crittenton Hospital, where Berz's father passed away in 2008, will send medical records to any doctor at the request of a patient free of charge. However, if that patient is deceased, the family must pay to obtain those records.

The hospital charges a dollar per page on top of a $23 fee. That policy is standard procedure, but Berz believes an exception should be made given the circumstances. Berz believes the hospital is just looking to gain from the situation.

"If Crittenton charged 500 Fata patients for about $2,000 each, that's about a million dollars," he tells Wimbley.

And Berz is not alone.

Many more have shared their unhappy thoughts with the hospital on social media. Some even wonder if the hospital is trying to hide some of the records, feeling partly responsible for the suspected situation Dr. Fata is alleged to have put so many patients and families in.

Fata pleaded not guilty to the charges and is still being held at the Wayne County jail on a $9 million bond.
