Canvassers OK recount of Detroit mayoral primary

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Former Detroit mayoral candidate Tom Barrow will get a recount of votes for the city's top elected office from Aug. 6 primary.

The Wayne County canvassers voted Thursday to recount the ballots after receiving a petition from Barrow.

Barrow finished out of the top two in the primary. He has claimed election fraud.

The recount follows certification Tuesday of the election by state canvassers who had to tabulate more than 24,000 write-in ballots for mayor. County officials deferred the certification to the state because city elections workers used numeric counts instead of hash marks to tabulate some of the write-ins.

Write-in candidate Mike Duggan received the most votes for mayor, followed by Benny Napoleon. They are to face off in the November general election.
