Robert Davis: Take away Dan Gilbert's gaming license

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Activist Robert Davis is asking the Michigan Gaming Control Board to revoke Dan Gilbert's gaming license because of what he says are illegal contributions Gilbert made to Mike Duggan's mayoral campaign.

Quicken Loans Political Action Committee (PAC) donated $34,000  to Duggan's campaign this past July. The PAC also contributed to a number of other candidates including Council President Saunteel Jenkins and councilmen James Tate and Andre Spivey. Normally that wouldn't be a problem. But since Gilbert is also a partner in Greektown Casino, Davis believes those donations break the law.

Just days ago, Quicken Loans took back an $80,000 donation it made to turnaround Detroit, a super PAC backing Mike Duggan after former candidate Tom Barrow raised the same question.

Sources say this issue is different because the Quicken Loans PAC is funded by employee contributions, not corporate dollars. It's also said to not be administered by Gilbert or anyone else with a gaming license.

Quicken loans PAC released this statement in response:

"This claim is baseless and has no merit. There is no violation of any Michigan gaming law or regulation. The PAC in question is an independent legal entity. In addition, no     person regulated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGBC) has contributed to this PAC during calendar years 2011, 2012 or 2013. Likewise, no person regulated by     the MGCB is an officer or director of the PAC."

Butch Hollowell, from Duggan For Detroit Legal Advisor also released this statement:

"This is just another frivolous complaint from Robert Davis. The Quicken PAC is a lawful PAC that has contributed to several candidates. We are confident that there is no problem with the legality of this donation."
