City Council: Should new $650m hockey arena and events center really be built?

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The City Council heard mixed opinions Thursday over the proposed redevelopment of Detroit, expected to include a new Red Wings arena, an events center and other residential and commercial changes.

The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) stands behind the deal. It utilizes their money, state and county funds, as well as Ilitch funds and private investments. However, several business owners downtown don't agree with the deal.

City Council members also had many questions about the city's involvement in the plan, such police patrols needed at the arena, how much the land is worth and plans for the old Joe Louis Arena.

Council members are expected to vote on the deal November 12th.
