Sheriff: Macomb County Jail too crowded, inmates could see early release

Posted: Updated:
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says the county's jail population has been over capacity for a week now, prompting the certification of an Overcrowding State of Emergency.

The maximum capacity is 1,213 prisoners; the jail currently houses 32 too many with a inmate count of 1,245 prisoners.

The county has two weeks to correct the overflow. If the problem is not corrected, some inmates could be released early.

Sheriff Wickersham tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue if some early releases occur, it will only be that of low-risk, non-violent offenders.

This is not the first time the county has seen an overcrowded jail. Prisoners have been released in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 due to this problem. The most recent time, back in 2008, 68 inmates were released.

If it comes down to releasing prisoners again, it likely won't happen right away. The judges will have a day or so to review two lists of sentenced and non-sentenced prisoners, and then make their decision.
