Boy struck by tree recovering after surgery

ATLANTA -

The 5-year-old boy struck by a fallen tree last month is showing signs of progress, his family says.

Tristen Wilson suffered a broken back, punctured lung and swelling on his brain after a 40-foot tall tree fell on top of him and his sister on August 9. His sister, Anslee, suffered a broken leg; Tristen has been in the hospital ever since the accident.

On Tuesday, surgeons at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston worked to reconstruct Tristen's skull.

Tristen's father, Ron Saint, said that surgery went well.

"I've seen him smile today and that was great," said Saint. "It was a half-smile -- looked like a whole smile to me."

Saint said that he has hope that Tristen's brain injury will heal.

"I've got high hopes. It's just going to take some long therapy," Saint said.

Saint said that the highlight of his day was the chance to thumb wrestle his young son.

"Of course he won, and he smiled when he beat me," Saint said. "So that's great. When he can thumb wrestle me -- that was wonderful."

The family has set up a website for donations for medical expenses.  Click here for more info: teammightyt.wix.com/tristen
