Obama Tries To Drum Up Support For Military Action Against Syria

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The administration is making its case to Congress on Tuesday, hoping to win support for war authorization in Syria.

It now comes down to Congress, and the White House calls this flooding the zone as two key administration figures, Secretary of State John Kerry and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

On Monday, the president met with two frequent critics, Sens. John McCain and Lindsay Graham, both of whom are likely to back congressional authorization.

"A vote against that resolution by Congress, I think, would be catastrophic because it would undermine the credibility of the United States of America," McCain said.

In an interview with a French newspaper, Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad has warned of igniting a Middle East powder keg if the U.S. intervenes, and many in Washington fear that even surgical cruise missile strikes will be difficult to contain.

As the Pentagon dispatches a the U.S.S. Nimitz carrier group to the region, military strategists warn that a protracted delay will give Syria more time to prepare for a strike.

"Any time a nation marches up to the brink of war and then sort of takes a knee for 10 days, that nation passes the time advantage and the initiative over to the enemy. And now the ball is in Assad's court," said retired Maj. Gen. Bob Scales, a Fox News military analyst.

Obama is going to Sweden on Tuesday and to the G-20 summit in Russia after that.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
