Rain dampens Labor Day on the Jersey Shore

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

The wet weather was a downer for businesses along the Jersey Shore Monday but shop owners needed to cash-in to help recover losses suffered during Superstorm Sandy.

But with only a few hours left in the holiday weekend, the numbers don’t appear to add up.

The rain, the fog, and the empty beaches -- it's the way it's been for a good part of the summer along the Jersey Coast

“Last summer, I don't think it rained this much last summer.”

Asbury Park Lifeguard Karli Rymer says the summer feels like it didn't even really get started.

“I really wish the sun would come right now out because sitting in the rain is not fun.”

Combine record rainfalls along the shore -- and an overall skepticism from tourists about what's its like being around post sandy construction has kept people at bay -- but not everybody...

“The rain’s not going to stop us so,” said one man. His fiancé added, “The weather’s been so crazy lately. Some days are really hot and some days are rainy. So we just took a chance to hang out.”

“There's nothing you can do. I mean weather is weather,” said Greg Cambeis, NJ Resident. “People curse Mother Nature but it is what it is.”

State officials say most businesses along the shore are down 40 percent in revenue compared to last year -- and for some -- that number is even higher.

“Normandy Beach where we have another restaurant, we're off 60 percent. Here in Asbury Park, we're off 25 percent.”

Marilyn Schlossbach owns numerous businesses along the shore, she says summer 2013 may be one she just wants to forget about.

“I just want to relax after this and really nurture my business and get back to an even keel -- it's been very rocky,” said Marilyn Schlossbach, Owner, Lightly Salted Surf Mercado

    Newark school enrollment problems

The school year in Newark is getting off to a rocky start. Classes start in less than two weeks and parents are still waiting in line for hours to find out where their kids are enrolled. The problem is being blamed on a glitch in the school's new online open enrollment system. To say mother of three Jennifer Caraballo is frustrated may be an understatement. She is one of hundreds of Newark parents desperately now trying to find a new school for her children.
