CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A new payment system is coming to Chicago Transit Authority trains and buses and Pace buses.

CTA and Pace announced information Friday about the system, called Ventra.

The Ventra card will be available to all CTA and Pace customers Sept. 9. The cards will be available at retailers, CTA rail stations, online and by phone.

CTA and Pace are encouraging customers to spend down balances on existing fare cards, which will be phased out. On Nov. 15, Chicago Card and Chicago Card Plus will no longer be accepted on buses and trains. On Dec. 15, CTA and Pace will no longer accept any magnetic stripe fare cards.

Customers can have their balances transferred from old cards to Ventra cards, free of charge.
