Michigan elections director: Duggan earned 25,000 more votes than Wayne County officials reported

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan's elections director says preliminary figures from a state canvass of write-in ballots show Mike Duggan earned nearly 25,000 more votes in Detroit's Aug. 6 mayoral primary than county officials counted.

Chris Thomas made the announcement in a court filing Friday. Thomas says the preliminary state count puts Duggan's total at 48,716.

The Board of State Canvassers this week counted 24,000 write-in ballots. Wayne County canvassers referred the ballots to the state because they were tallied numerically instead of with hash marks.

Duggan and Benny Napoleon finished far ahead of the other candidates and will face each other in the November general election.

Unofficial results from Detroit showed Duggan received 44,395 write-in votes.

County canvassers said they counted about 24,000 valid votes for Duggan and about 28,300 for Napoleon.
