Jersey City teen runs hot dog stand

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - A 14-year-old named Robert is Jersey City’s youngest entrepreneur.

Robert is a superb businessman.  He's mindful of both his customers taste and wallet.  He sells his dogs for only $1.50 each, or $2 with all the fixings. His cart is impeccable, as well.

He has opened a hot dog stand on one of the most dangerous corners in the city.  The street he is on has been riddled with shootings and, just recently, a 13-year-old child was shot in the area.

There have been 33 shootings in Jersey City this year and statistics show that it is the U.S.’s 26th most dangerous city.

Robert's advice to future business startups, “First you have to pay attention in school to get your grades up and second you have to have a mentor, who actually wants to help you.”

His mentor, David Adams, has taken the neighborhood kids under his wing.

Adams hopes to keep kids away from gangs, drugs, and gun violence, by teaching them positive life skills.

He has taken several young men under his wing. He said one of the reasons they came up with the stand is that they couldn’t get local businesses to hire the young men.

Adams says, "In Jersey City the streets are rough, for these kids to be the age they are, they have experienced some things that most children have not experienced.  These guys know what gunshots sound like, these guys have actually experienced being around gunshots and running."

Robert is using his profits to buy clothes for school.
