Former marine rides from Alaska to Ariz. raising money for wounded warrior

Updated:
PHOENIX -

What would you do for a fellow marine in need? One man decided to drive from Alaska to Arizona to raise awareness -- in a car that makes most people do a double take.

"It is a 'rat rod.' A 1934 coupe and it's got a ten inch chop."

This is Lenny Cestaro's ride. He drove it from Alaska to Arizona.

"It's easy to get into but it's hard to get out. Feel every crack in the road, it has great suspension," says Cestaro.

The trip wasn't a lark. The former marine drove for 8 days to raise awareness for a wounded soldier. His name is Derek Herrera.

"We just found out our former lieutenant now a captain was injured in Afghanistan. That dedication had a life of its own."

Cestaro is raising money for his captain's recovery. He is hoping to walk again. He needs an exoskeleton to help him do that.

Another marine joined him on the road. They got a lot of attention.

"Rat rods started off in the 50's. They took model T's and A's, stripped them down. Mostly mechanics that started them out."

Cestaro offered us a ride in the rat rod. It looked like a tuna can, and it felt like it inside, but the ride was a lot more comfortable than we thought.

He was proud to help his captain, someone he calls a real hero.
