Record-breaking flathead catfish reeled in in Arizona

Fishermen tell all sorts of stories about the fish they catch and the ones that got away. Some are true and some aren't.

But a valley man has quite a story to tell and it's a real doozie. He reeled in the biggest catfish ever caught here in Arizona.

And his story has other anglers around the country looking at Arizona as a premium fishing destination.

"We have the big fish now and that's why people are wanting to come here."

And that's due in large part to Ed Wilcoxson. Affectionately known to the fishing world as "Flathead" Ed, because of his monster catch -- a 75 pound flathead catfish.

"Broke a 25 year record off the Colorado river."

Ed is a native Arizonan, whose been fishing our waters his entire life. He even gives tours of some of the state's hottest fishing holes. But it was an early morning trip back in April that caught everyone's attention.

"I'm laying down I'm going to sleep just waiting for the clicker to go off and the clicker went off and BAM! Click click click."

And on the other end of his line, a giant flathead catfish.

"I was figuring it was in the 50-60 pound range… and I picked it up and it said 75 pounds and I went like wow."

And so did everyone else.

His catch proved to be the bait that is luring fisherman from all over the country and the world to Arizona -- in hopes of catching yet another big one.

But Ed's not letting all of the fame go to his head.

"What do you get for having a record fish? You get a little plaque and recognition!"
