State Rep. Tlaib protesting 'Southwest Metals' for alleged stolen scraps

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

State Representative Rashida Tlaib protesting in front of 'Southwest Metals' on Fort Street Tuesday night in Detroit. She says the business is known for buying stolen scraps.

But owner Joe Fawaz says there's another reason she's targeting his business - because they couldn't give her a deal when her catalytic converter was stolen.

Last week, the car part was stolen off her vehicle while her family visited Belle Isle. Tlaib tells us she went to 'Southwest Metals' looking for the part, but did not find it.

Her husband even returned to the business, hoping to get a better price on a converter than the couple received from other shops.

Fawaz says he has the evidence to prove Tlaib's vendetta: text messages exchanged between the two of them, along with security video placing her and her husband at the shop.

Tlaib denies the protest is the retaliation of an attempted deal gone sour. She says her catalytic converter getting stolen only fueled the fire in her plight against stolen scraps.
