George Lopez: We Still Have Issues, and It's Perfect For Comedy

Posted: Updated:

George Lopez is playing the Gibson Ampitheatre this weekend for the last time, but not because he's retiring from standup.

"They're tearing it down! Universal Studios is going to put a Harry Potter ride there...They want thrills and adventure take the subway from the Valley to Hollywood Boulevard...that'll give you all the danger that you want. You'll see characters like Dumbledore and Hermione in there, it'll smell like pee, that's the bad part."

George talked to Steve and Lisa about why he's thrilled to be playing there for the last time and explained why it holds a special place in his heart.

"I saw Eddie Murphy there in the early 80's...this will be my 23rd show as it ends...it holds a special place. I wanted to be a comedian my whole life...I'm from San Fernando and to see it go away is sad but also I'm very happy I get to do this."

George also talked a new show he's got coming to FX next year, St. George, why he thinks his last sitcom is bigger than ever, and shared his secret to looking young.

Fun Facts About George Lopez:

  • In 1999, Lopez hosted a major morning radio show for Clear Channel Communications in Los Angeles. He was the first Latino to have headlined the keystone morning radio slot on an English-language station in LA — the nation's top radio market.
  • In 2000, after several years of performing stand-up comedy, Lopez was approached by actress Sandra Bullock for Lopez to produce and star in a comedy. Bullock was concerned about the lack of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms on American television and pushed to get a sitcom on television that starred Hispanics without being exclusively about the Hispanic American community.
  • Lopez earned praise for his performance in the HBO Films drama, Real Women Have Curves, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received the 2002 Audience Award.
