Sarah Murnaghan Returns Home To Family And Friends

Posted: Updated:
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. -

You can feel the excitement as 11-year-old Sarah Murnaghan waves hello from her front doorsteps. A miracle came true for her.

"We're proud of Sarah and what she achieved. She's so strong to be getting here today," says Fran Murnaghan, Sarah's dad.

Only FOX 29's cameras captured little Sarah arriving at her Newtown Square home for the first time on Tuesday morning. She was fighting for her life in the hospital over the last six months. Sarah was welcomed by balloons and colorful signs, as well as family friends and neighbors like Nicole Shmitt.

"We waved to her. She looked great. She was happy and smiling," says Nicole Shmitt.

We first met Sarah when she was 10 years old. She was dying from Cystic Fibrosis. Donor rules prevented her from being on the adult transplant list since she was under the age of 12. That rule was eventually suspended by a judge.

A major milestone came this summer when she got the double lung transplant surgery. But they failed her, and days later, she got a second set. From there, Sarah was on the road to recover.

"We've all been rooting or Sarah. It was personal and emotional to see her make it. There are many times we were nervous that the homecoming might not have been so happy," recalls Shmitt.

Back at home, Sarah's mother shares a message with the millions of people who've fallen in love with her little girl.

"Without people like her donors we wouldn't have any of this. We have this great future in front of us," says Janet Murnaghan.

Sarah's recovery is now focused on building muscle strength, her family says.

Robert De Niro says Tribeca Film Festival is his passion

Robert De Niro is a family man, a filmmaker, an entrepreneur and one of my favorite actors of all time. He's also a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which has more to see than ever before. De Niro wears just as many hats on screen as he does in real life. The father of six starred in six films last year, owns four restaurants and a hotel, and still finds time each spring for the Tribeca Film Festival, Lower Manhattan's annual cinematic showcase.

New York City is exploring ways to curb the speed of taxis. The Taxi and Limousine Commission this week issued a request for information on "anti speeding vehicle technologies."  The measures include devices that can intervene when drivers exceed posted speeds and "advisory systems" that can sound alarms when reckless driving is detected.
