CDC: Moms, older women binge drinking on the rise

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's a dirty little secret that more and more women are keeping. They're binge drinking – at an alarming rate.

This time around it's not a typical report about college kids. This report focuses on mothers and older women trying to drink the edge off after an exhausting day.

Stephanie Hazard, a recovering alcoholic, said, "I just, I remember thinking to myself, 'Wow, I can't go without a drink.'"

Fresh off from a divorce and adjusting to the solo demands of raising her son, Stephanie says that drinking a glass of wine to unwind in the evening hours soon became a dangerous habit.

"I was drinking home alone. I was drinking to the point where I was almost finishing a bottle of wine a night; not every night, but every other night," she said.

More and more, her story is not an uncommon one. Binge drinking is defined for women as four or more drinks in the span of two hours.

While about 24 percent of binge-drinking women are college age, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 10 percent are between the ages of 45 and 64. Of those, many have household incomes of $75,000 or more.
