Seal Beach E-Cigarette Smoke Shop Proposed Ban - New York News

Seal Beach E-Cigarette Smoke Shop Proposed Ban

Posted: Updated:

As popular as electronic cigarettes are becoming, Seal Beach lawmakers are proposing to put a halt on any new e-smoke shops from opening up in the community.

They're voting on an ordinance which would put a 45-day moratorium on any new e-cigarette retailer.  City officials say it stemmed from inquiries from potential business owners interested in opening up smoke shops.

Seal Beach Community Development Director, Jim Basham, says "the city wants more time to explore the health affects and any time you have a smoke related business you want to take careful consideration and figure out how it impacts the community."

There is one specialty smoke shop in Seal Beach and a worker there says if the provision passes "it will likely affect sales here."   The worker did not want to give his name.

The FDA is also considering whether or not to ban on-line sales of e-cigarettes due to potential health risks.  Supporters of e-cigs say they're a healthier option than traditional cigarettes since electronic cigarettes use liquid nicotine which they argue is no more harmful than water vapor.

At this time, it's not clear what the health affects are of e-cigs, but they are cheaper than regular cigarettes.

If the ordinance is passed, Seal Beach would be the first city in Orange County to have such a ban.
