Sarah Will Be Going Home After Several Months At CHOP

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The Murnaghans have called CHOP home for several months, Sarah's parents have been by her bedside every night. But tomorrow's homecoming could be the biggest breakthrough yet.

From the Facebook status update that Janet Murnaghan longed to share with the world, to the welcome home balloons at the family's Newtown Square house, elation is in the air with 11-year-old Sarah's return home just one day away.

Only FOX 29 was there when medical equipment was dropped off ahead of her arrival. Neighbors say they are thrilled to have Sarah continue healing where she belongs.

"We've been always praying and thinking about her, sending her positive thoughts and it's such a relief for all of us," says Felice Hefferan.

Felice Hefferan lives next door and is a close family friend. News of Sarah's homecoming has touched her deeply, but she says it's even more heartfelt when she looks at her son Ryan.

"He's asking about when Sarah is coming home. He's very close with Sarah's siblings. It's been great," says Hefferan.

"I like Sarah because I haven't seen her in a long time," says Ryan.

Sarah's journey inspired the nation for months, as the Murnaghan family chronicled every moment with pictures and videos. We first met her in June, during her dire need for a double lung transplant. She was dying from Cystic Fibrosis.

Her story made international headlines when we learned of a donor rule preventing her from getting on the adult transplant list because of her age.

The family celebrated when the rule was suspended and she got the lungs she badly needed. But a setback was just hours away, when those lungs failed.

A second surgery followed with new lungs, but ones that had to be treated, as doctors cut away a presence of pneumonia.

But we've seen several miracles and milestones after that. Sarah quickly recovered, her breathing tube was removed, she took her first steps after being bed-ridden for weeks. And we celebrated her 11th birthday with her while she continued the fight from her hospital room in CHOP.

Now a wish comes true as she prepares to take her first steps into her home.

Sarah's family has scheduled a 4 p.m. press conference from their door step tomorrow. That's when we will see Sarah at home for the first time. They will talk about this whole ordeal.
