Mom, Who Left Baby In Bathroom Stall, Facing Charges

Posted: Updated:
LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. -

"She killed a child. It's sad. I'm shocked," says Gina Spinosa, a mother of five.

Her words are a common thought tonight, as the Lower Saucon community comes to grips with the fact that 26 year old Amanda Hein from Allentown is accused of taking her own baby's life.

"This lady made a bad choice. Why? I don't know," says John Morganelli.

Northampton District Attorney John Morganelli tells us that Hein was at Starters Pub on Route 378, near Bethlehem, last week when she went into labor.

Investigators say the baby boy was born in a bathroom stall. That's when, police explain, Hein suffocated him, put him in a garbage bag and tossed the newborn into the toilet tank.

"She knew she was pregnant, but didn't tell anyone including the men she was with," says DA Morganelli.

The baby was found the next morning by a cleaning crew.

Lauren Midlam is six years older than Hein.

"Something that traumatizing happens to you, you would alert someone who works there to call somebody," says Midlam.

The DA says the guys she was with asked her if she was okay and offered to take her to the hospital. But according to police reports, Hein refused because she didn't have insurance

"A 26 year old should know better. There are so many people that want that child," says Spinosa.

According to Pennsylvania law, Hein could have gone to any hospital and dropped off the baby with no questions asked. Tonight, Hein is facing a criminal homicide charge, which is a capital case. Right now she is not in custody, but police say they know where she is. They are also looking for the baby's father.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
