Carter Center:Liberian mental health work advances

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Officials with the Carter Center say efforts to expand mental health services in Liberia have reached a key milestone, with 100 clinicians now providing services to all 15 counties in the African nation.

Carter Center officials say Liberia is on target to reach its goal of expanding access to mental health care to 70% of the population within a few years. Carter Center officials say Liberia previously had one psychiatrist to meet the needs of at least 300,000 suffering from mental illness.

On Friday, a class of Liberian nurses, physician assistants and educators graduated from a mental health training program held in Liberia's capital.

The program's conducted in partnership with the Liberia Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and clinicians will work in clinics and hospitals in remote areas.
