Detroit high schoolers invited to London study-abroad program

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Six Denby High School students are chosen to visit pen pals in Liverpool, England as part of a study-abroad program organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

Most of the students have never left Detroit, and none have ever traveled outside of the United States, school officials say.

"I want to go to London and see what their museums are like, and what their sightseeing is like because I never left out the city of Detroit, except when I went to New Jersey one time," Miles Sholar tells Fox 2's Randy Wimley. Scholar is one of the students going on the trip. We're told about 20 students applied.

The students leave Saturday, August 24 and will be gone for a week. Three chaperones are also going. The U.S. Embassy in London has invited the group to visit during their stay. But Scholar seems most excited to compare the real-life cultural differences with the pen pals he and the other students have only known through words.

"We barely know anything about London, and London barely knows anything about Detroit. So we're just going to be exchanging what are our two cultures are like and how they intertwine with each other. I just want to tell them the background - a lot of famous names came out of Detroit. Detroit has a rich culture behind it. Detroit was very popular back in the day ,and still is a big city ,so I want to tell them how big the city is and how it affected our economy in such a way," Scholar says.

Scholar will be a junior this fall at Denby High School, the Education Achievement Authority-run school.
