Tunnel on westbound I-10 closed over weekend for repair

PHOENIX -

The I-10 tunnel will be closed in the westbound direction over the weekend while workers repair damage caused by a watermelon truck crash back in July.

Back on July 11, a semi truck transporting watermelons and other produce jackknifed in the westbound I-10 tunnel, causing a traffic backup for hours.

The fruit spilled all over the tunnel. Crews had to gather all the produce, tow the semi, and then rinse the roadway with hoses. What made everything worse was the fact that the fruits and vegetables were expired, rotting, and smelly -- unsold at valley Wal-Marts, on their way to a farm for composting.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between the I-17 split and 7th Ave from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday. It will open up to traffic during the day, but repair work will continue 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.

DETOUR: Westbound I-10 traffic will detour along northbound I-17. Westbound Loop 202 traffic entering westbound I-10 will exit at 7th Street and use McDowell Road to travel beyond closure at 7th Avenue. Sky Harbor traffic leaving airport's west end can reach westbound I-10 by going west on Buckeye Road, east on I-10 and north on I-17.
