14-year-old stands up to thieves during bus stop robbery

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A brave 14-year-old was attacked at a school bus stop in Gary, Indiana all because she stood up to would-be thieves.

Bruised and broke, the 8th grader said instead of being afraid, she was mad because the robbers were asking for stuff she didn't have. She told FOX 32 News that she knew her dad was home and when she tried to run to him, she was punched in the face.

"They said if we don't listen to them somebody is gonna get hurt," she recalls.

And somebody did.

That 14-year-old said she was running late for school Wednesday morning and didn't think she would even make it on the bus. Seconds later, things only got worse when she stopped at the corner of 24th and Gerry and waited.

She says four adults in their twenties or thirties were waiting as well.

"There were two cars, a black one and a red one," she says. "The red one drove off after the fire truck left, but the black one stayed that's when the four people got out and asked for our electronics and our money."

That 8th grade honor student was with seven other students before anyone at the bus stop said anything. She told the would-be thieves that nobody had anything.

When she turned around to run to her house to get her father and call police, she says the two female suspects grabbed her hair and started punching her in the face. Her bottom lip still busted.

"We moved from Chicago because this same type of stuff was happening in Chicago so we moved out here," the victim's father says. "From what they described, these were grown men and women that attacked these kids at the bus stop. Not only my daughter, but they threatened every at the bus stop."

"Whoever these people is, I hope they get caught," the student's mother says. "It's more kids out here and like my husband said, it can happen to anyone."

To make sure it doesn't happen to another student, letters were sent home with each child who attends Lake Ridge Middle School. It also includes a description of the car leaving the scene of the attack: a black, 4-door Impala.

Until the thieves are caught, the superintendent of Lake Ridge is asking parents to help out on patrols.
