Hiker's future wife witnesses fatal fall off Mogollon Rim

MESA, Ariz. -

A valley man has tragically died at one of the most beautiful spots in Arizona. He fell more than 200 feet off the Mogollon Rim. The accident happened during a family camping trip, and was witnessed by the woman who he was planning to spend the rest of his life with.

That man's fiance is now talking about the tragedy in an effort to make sure this doesn't happen to someone else.

Just 36 years old, Casey Frazier was an avid outdoorsman, and an experienced hiker. He was set to officially ask for his girlfriend's hand in marriage during the very trip on which he lost his life.

"He told me that was the most amazing amazing time he's ever had. He's never been happier in his life."

It was just a few days ago that Tanya Hill's soon-to-be husband wrapped his arms around her. The couple and their blended family were on a weekend camping trip outside Payson. It was minutes after that embrace that tragedy struck.

"We began our walk back and he said 'hey I got to take one last look.' I was at least 20 feet away if not more. As soon as he had lost his footing it was a quick 'help!' and that was it. There was nothing to grab onto, nothing to stop his fall, it was straight down from there," says Hill.

"Trent came running back to camp to let us know that his father had fallen," says Tanya's father Wayne.

Wayne and his two sons were also on the trip and tried to help. But Casey Frazier had fallen more than 200 feet.

His soon-to-be brother-in-law made it down the cliff and was with him when he took his last breath.

"He was loving and sweet and so bright," says mom Katy Robertson.

The oldest of 5, Frazier is described as the leader, a kind hearted man who lit up a room.

"Go to the lake and go fishing with me," says Trent Frazier.

He taught his son Trent to fish, and his future wife's kids to love the outdoors. Sister Keri Wheelwright is shocked such an expert hiker could fall.

"The structure of that rim you just can't get close and it's a tempting view, beautiful but you just can't get close you just can't," says Wheelwright.

His family planted a tree in his memory today, near the site where he fell. But it's the happy memories made here that will always be in their hearts.

"He's the most amazing and most loving man, the most amazing father," says Hill.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office is investigating the fall.

An account has been set up at Wells Fargo in the name of "Casey Frazier Memorial," account number 6513704806.

Services are set for Saturday, August 24, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church at 15 E 1st Ave in Mesa.
