MAHTOMEDI, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating after nearly 50 brass vases were stolen from graves at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mahtomedi.

The head of maintenance reported that the vases must have been taken between Saturday and Sunday from the burial sites located at 3400 Century Avenue.

Each vase is reportedly valued at $200, and although the styles differ, each stands 10 inches high and has a diameter of four inches.

Deputies do not have any suspects at this time; however, investigators have contacted local recycling centers in an effort to catch anyone who attempts to sell them for scrap.

State law requires scrap yards and metal recycling centers to see a picture ID and keep a logbook of those they buy from in case any items turn out to be stolen.

Detectives are also reaching out to other agencies in the metro to see if any similar thefts have happened in other nearby jurisdictions.

Officer are also appealing to members of the public by urging anyone with information related to the theft or the location of the vases to call 651-430-7850 or send an e-mail to sheriff@co.washington.mn.us. Tips may be made anonymously.
