A north suburban man with prior armed robbery convictions is being held on a $250,000 bond after being charged with a string of armed robberies of businesses in Lake County over a 10-day period.

Leroy Regan, 38, of the 33000 block of Sunset in Grayslake appeared in court Tuesday after being charged with seven counts of armed robbery, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of a being a habitual criminal, according to a statement from Waukegan police.

Regan is charged with a string of Lake County robberies that began with the holdup of the Dollar General at 1917 Martin Luther King in Waukegan on Aug. 5, and ended with the robbery of the Family Dollar at 1106 Washington in Waukegan on Aug. 14, police said.

According to police, he is also charged with robbing:

— Family Dollar at 1701 Martin Luther King in Waukegan on Aug. 6;

— Citgo at 2135 N. Green Bay Rd. in Waukegan on Aug. 8;

— Taco Bell at 3200 N. Lewis in Waukegan on Aug. 8;

— 7-Eleven at Green Bay and Yorkhouse in unincorporated Lake County on Aug. 11; and

— Thortons at 55 Skokie Valley Rd. on Highland Park on Aug. 12.

Police report the offender displayed a handgun, and in the Aug. 8 robbery at Taco Bell, allegedly fired a shot at an employee, who was not injured.

Regan also faces charges in Cook County for the robbery of the 7-Eleven/Citgo at 500 Skokie Blvd. in Wilmette on Aug. 15, according to police.

Waukegan Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said Regan's arrest in North Chicago was aided by the arrest of an alleged accomplice in the Wilmette robbery.

Wilmette police reported last weekend that a witness to the 7-Eleven/Citgo incident approached an officer in his squad car at a nearby intersection to report seeing the clerk held up at gunpoint.

The officer reportedly confronted two suspects as they left the store and they fled on foot in opposite directions, but one was apprehended as he attempted to climb a fence following a short chase behind the store.

Arrested and charged was 30-year-old Jeffrey Valentine of 6107 S. Washtenaw Ave. in Chicago. He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond, and Wilmette police released information describing Valentine's accomplice.

Florip said police identified Regan as a suspect following the Wilmette incident.

Regan has served time in prison including a 3-year sentence for a January 2000 armed robbery at Best Inn in Waukegan. Because of his record, Regan was charged a Class X felony for being a habitual criminal form having three offenses involving a weapon.

Regan's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 18 in Waukegan, police said.

The multi-jurisdictional investigation involved Waukegan, Wilmette, Highland Park, North Chicago and Lake County Sheriff's police.
