Wildfire near Yarnell grows to 815 acres

Posted: Updated:

YARNELL, Ariz. (AP) -- A wildfire burning five miles east of the communities of Yarnell and Peeples Valley in north-central Arizona has grown to 815 acres.

Officials say the French Gulch Fire remained 5 percent contained Tuesday with full containment expected by Friday evening.

The lightning-caused blaze is in the same region of western Yavapai County as the deadly Yarnell Hill fire. That fire killed 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots on June 30 when shifting wind swept flames over their position.

The state Forestry Division says the current fire is burning in brush and low trees in extremely rugged terrain where there's no road access for firefighters.

Officials say 150 personnel are battling the blaze. Four helicopters are dropping water and transporting crews.

The French Gulch Fire started Saturday night and isn't threatening any structures.
