DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A young woman is in the hospital in intensive care. She was just crossing the street early Sunday morning on 7 Mile between Fairport and JoAnn in Detroit when she was hit by a car that didn't stop. Now, her family is hoping someone will come forward with information to help police catch the hit-and-run driver.

The victim, Margaret Waleed, 24, had just been accepted into graduate school. She was out celebrating with friends around 1:30am Sunday when she went to get something from her car and was hit.

"Margaret is a strong person," says her cousin, Christine Hamiel. "She's always been strong since she's been little so for me to see her like that it hurt me because I was there."

Hamiel was right by Waleed's side after the hit-and-run. She saw the driver speed off leaving her cousin helpless and injured in the road. Her fiance tells Fox 2 she has two broken legs and a fractured pelvis. She also suffered a severed artery that was repaired. The couple plans to get married in 2015.

Witnesses believe the car involved is a dark green Ford Explorer with a weather strip on the hood. The SUV should have damage to the front passenger side. The family is offering $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. You can also call Detroit Police or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
