Kelly: Stop and frisk ruling will hurt minorities

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says minority communities would suffer the most if a federal judge’s order to change the NYPD’s “stop and frisk” program.

Kelly appeared Sunday morning program “Face the Nation” on CBS and says the NYPD policy saves lives, that 97 percent of victims of gun violence are Black or Hispanic and those people saved have the same demographics.

U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin says the stops discriminate against Blacks and Hispanics. The city says it will appeal.

He says changes to the stop and frisk program could have a devastating effect on New York City’s crime rate.

Kelly also questioned the court’s order to test officers with tiny video cameras and said the cameras will cause problems when police respond to domestic disturbances or when someone wants to provide confidential information.
