EM Kevyn Orr on what Detroit will look like in a year

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

By September 2014, Detroit's Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr will likely be on his way out. So what will Detroit look like in a year?

Orr says his job is to prepare Detroit for its next chapter by tackling the city's massive debt and making moves that a neither easy nor popular. Monday, Orr's team will meet with Deroit's union to talk about pensions and come to an agreement on how much they're underfunded. It's a hot topic that's left thousands with a lot of questions and anger.

But while many focus on Detroit's bankruptcy, the real question is what will Detroit look like after Kevyn Orr is gone? That's a question the EM is already considering. He says Detroit could become a new city similar to Pittsburgh or Washington, DC.

Orr's opponents say that "new city" is being built on the backs of citizens, city workers and retirees who are being left behind. But, in just 5-months, Orr has moved forward on plans to remove blight, improve lighting and get new police cars on Detroit's roads and modern gear for firefighters. He says his critics are not seeing the big picture.
