Indiana man involved in standoff charged with 14 felonies

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Jackson Township man who held police at bay for almost nine hours Wednesday has been charged with 14 felonies, the Post Tribune is reporting.

The Porter County Prosecutor's office filed the charges Friday against Eric S. Martin, 45.

The prosecutor charged Martin with six counts of Class a felony attempted murder, each of which carry a possible sentence of 20 to 50 years.

Martin is also charged with one count of Class B felony aggravated battery, which carries a possible sentence of six to 20 years; and seven counts of Class C felony criminal recklessness, which each carry a possible sentence of two to eight years.

There is no bail bond set, and Porter County Sheriff's Department Spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower said that the jail would finish booking Martin when he is more mentally able.

The attempted murder and criminal recklessness charges are for the seven shots that Martin took at police with a M-1 Garand .30-06 rifle during the standoff at his home on County Road 1050 East.

One shot went through a living room wall and into the house's garage.

The aggravated battery charge covers Martin allegedly punching and gouging the eyes of an older relative, then holding a knife to his neck and cutting it.

It was after that relative went to Porter Hospital's emergency room that police went to the home with a warrant to take Martin in for psychiatric observation.

Martin's case wasn't assigned to a judge as of Friday afternoon.
