Compromise reached on 'God is Dead' art at school

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A mother concerned about art work posted at a Newton County school with the words "God is Dead" got a chance to voice her concerns to the principal on Friday.

As FOX 5 reported on Monday,
Crystal Mitchell was upset about a poster at Alcovy High School that quoted from the Arthur Miller play "The Crucible."

"It made my daughter very uncomfortable," Mitchell said. "If my child can't pray in school and they've taken religion out of school, for this to be plastered on the walls of school, is a huge concern for me."

Mitchell's Facebook page, "God Is Alive In Newton," has garnered more than 500 likes in just a few days.

Mitchell said that after the story aired, and the protest gained steam on Facebook, the school decided to take action. But they won't be taking the art down.

To some, however, the poster is art, featuring a well-known line in the celebrated play about the Salem Witch trials that Miller wrote to symbolize the hunt for Communists during the McCarthy era.

"Thousands of students read this book every year. If it's not appropriate on the classroom wall, where is it appropriate," said Sherri Davis-Viniard of Newton County Schools.

In Mitchell's Friday evening meeting with Alcovy Principal Dr. Sandra Owens, Mitchell said she was told the drawings are a reflection of the play, not a religious statement.

However, the school acknowledges that others may not see it that way, so Mitchell says school leaders have decided to have meetings with freshmen and sophomores to explain the context of the pictures, while leaving them up.

Mitchell wrote on her Facebook page, "So it's not a total loss on our end."

Mitchell says she is still hoping the school takes the pictures down, but the school district says it has heard very few complaints about them.
