Bill Hader: I Have Always Done Impressions

Posted: Updated:

When Bill Hader started doing "The Californians" on Saturday Night Live, he had no idea how it would play to anyone outside of the Golden State. In fact, it wasn't even intended to be a sketch...just a running joke between he and other cast members. He gave some of the inside scoop on Good Day LA Monday morning.

"It got to be a thing when we started laughing a lot...that's a bit that Fred Armisen and I did for a long time where we were always a guy, specifically a guy from San Pedro who was visiting L.A. and explaining how he was going to get home. We did it forever and is was like 'oh yeah we should write that.'"

Bill, who's got a sequel to the hit kids flick "Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs" hitting theaters next month, talked to Steve and Maria about the fun they had doing "The Californians"...and the art of cracking each other up during the show.

"During rehearsal he (Fred Armisen) was like 'Hey, what are you doing here?' And then on air he was like "What are youuuuuu doing heeeeeerrrre? and then it became a game."

Despite looking calm on the air, Bill talked about his anxiety about performing in front of people. "I just overall have bad stage fright which is ironic that I was making my living on a show that was on live national television."

Bill also talked about his Emmy nomination for SNL, what people ask him to do the most when they meet him (hint: it involves Stefon), and asking Maria exactly why she reads Playboy.

Fun Facts About Bill Hader:

  • He is best known for his work as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, his lead voice role in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and his supporting roles in comedy films such as Superbad, Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, Adventureland, Men in Black 3, Paul, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. He is currently a writer for the animated comedy series South Park.
  • Hader's comedic aspirations eventually led him to Los Angeles where he joined the Second City, a comedy troupe that has been a training ground for many SNL cast members since the 1970s.
  • Hader was "discovered" by Megan Mullally of Will & Grace while working with the Los Angeles-based comedy troupe "Animals from the Future." Mullally brought him to the attention of SNL producer Lorne Michaels. Hader was hired as a "featured player" and made his debut on the show on October 1, 2005.
  • Hader has said that he performed impersonations of teachers and friends when he was growing up, but did not do impersonations of famous people until his Saturday Night Live audition.
