Let It Rip: Petroleum coke, parents not vaccinating kids

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The piles of petroleum coke being stored along the riverfront has been the source of a hot debate in Detroit.

State health experts said the pet coke was not toxic, but now after protest and growing concerns, the company and its jobs are leaving. Some say the protesters have done more harm than good.

Joining us to discuss were Detroit News columnist Henry Payne and Nick Schroeck from the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center.

Plus, vaccinations and the perceived link to autism, despite medical evidence that prove vaccines do not cause the condition, more and more Michigan parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children. Now diseases once thought to be near eradication are making a comeback.

Our panel on this topic included mothers Lisa Croff and Carolyn Gammicchia and pediatrician Dr. Nakia Williams.

Finally, Charlie Langton takes "Let It Rip" on the road and asks people whether they would support increasing the sales tax to fund education and fix the roads.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
