NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A tornado did indeed hit Manahawkin, N.J., Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service confirmed.

The twister touched down at 10:05 a.m. near the intersection of Route 9 and Oak Avenue and cut a path for two miles in the Stafford Township community before lifting off near Hilliard Boulevard and Beach Avenue, the weather service said.

The weather service estimated the wind speed of the tornado at 85 mph, making it an EF-0, the weakest tornado category on the Fujita scale.

The tornado, which was between 50 and 100 yards wide, knocked down numerous trees, which damaged a garage and the roofs of several church buildings, officials said.

The tornado in Ocean County was spawned in a line of powerful storms with damaging winds that raked southern and central New Jersey. Other strong storms were reported in Gloucester and Camden counties.

The weather service issued then canceled a tornado warning in Ocean County shortly before the storm hit Stafford.

Storms left hundreds without power after dumping 2 inches or more of rain.

Some voting booths in Burlington County had to be moved when water seeped into polling places.

Flooding and lightning is reported throughout the Garden State.
